Hair gels play such a huge role in natural hair styling, from providing sleekness to defining curls. We all desire a flake free day, which is unfortunately rare. The hair gel that performs well flakes really badly and the hair gel that does not flake always performs poorly. Whilst on the pursuit for the perfect hair gel, I came across a YouTube tutorial for making your own flaxseed hair gel. I was impressed with the simplicity of the process. I was also fascinated with the hair gel’s alleged ability to not flake.
Rejecting the DIY route, I decided to search the rapidly growing natural hair market for a flaxseed hair gel. That is how I discovered the brand, Aunt Jackie’s Curls & Coils. I purchased their Defining Curl Custard (£4.92, including p&p, from Amazon) as well as their Flaxseed Elongating Curling Gel (£3.99, from PAK Cosmetics). My first impression of a product is always influenced by its scent. Aunt Jackie’s Flaxseed Elongating Curling Gel smells lovely. The product’s consistency doesn’t really vary from your average hair gel.
Since launching Your Beauty First, I have only labelled one product a “staple investment”. This is the second. Where do I start? What can I tell you? It is hard to explain in words or without a visual demonstration. I have used this hair gel for a Wash & Go as well as to finger coil. You can apply it to wet or dry hair. In addition to a flake free finish, minimal shrinkage! Aunt Jackie’s Flaxseed Elongating Curling Gel always leaves my hair defined, bouncy and moisturised as well as flake free. I love it and I hope to share a photographic demonstration in the future. Calling all coily, kinky, curly haired individuals, this is a must have!
UPDATE – 22/10/15: Whilst this product remains a “staple investment” and one of the best hair gels I have ever used (in regards to natural hair styling), it does appear to flake. However, a bad combination of products can lead to excessive flaking and I have not used this hair gel on product free hair.
