Once obsessed with magazines, last year I made the conscious decision to boycott publications that failed to acknowledge diversity, women like myself. My boycott went beyond the purchasing or reading of a magazine, I also stopped following social media feeds. What triggered my decision was simply growing up and learning to love myself; I refuse to apologise for who I am.
“I will not pay to be ignored or discriminated against”
A matured perspective opened my eyes and mind to the obvious, the lack of respect publications (in particular, women’s magazines) have for women of colour. The acknowledgment of diversity remains a rare sight. There also appears to be a new “trend” emerging and it is rather insulting. If a black woman was to grace a magazine cover, it will be a multiple cover issue, including an alternative cover(s) featuring a white woman. I’ll always love magazines but I will not pay to be ignored or discriminated against.
However, I can’t help but rave about this magazine issue as it features a fellow Brit as well as a black supermodel. Jourdan Dunn, captured by Zee Nunes, covers the double cover issue of February’s Vogue Brasil. She looks absolutely stunning! I am loving the afro as well as the styling. I would love to get my hands on a copy! Congratulations Jourdan, you look beautiful!
