No sulphates, no parabens and no silcones – guarantees all natural curly haired individuals have become accustomed to expect. The natural hair movement has inspired brands once dedicated to the relaxer to diversify their ranges, introducing products dedicated to natural hair care.
A brand primarily known for its relaxers, Dark and Lovely’s voyage into the natural hair care market is no big surprise as relaxer sales remain in a steady decline. The Au Naturale range first caught my eye whilst online shopping. After watching as well as reading a few mixed reviews, I decided to purchase two bottles of the Anti-Shrinkage Gentle Softening Wash (on sale, £3.99 each, from Superdrug).
Let’s begin with the scent, which I believe is Dark and Lovely’s specialty, something they always do best! Labelled a “softening wash”, this shampoo smells edible, absolutely amazing! It’s a sweet mango, tropical scent. If this review were solely based on scent, I would most definitely give this product a solid 10 out of 10.
For a product that claims to be natural, it lathers rather well and leaves your hair feeling very clean. In regards to the product’s unique selling point, it claims to elongate curls, reducing shrinkage, a big curly dilemma. My hair tends to shrink by up to 75% so I am always looking for products or methods that will aid in reducing shrinkage.
Unexpectedly, even without the entire range, I saw a result! My 4A curls felt soft as well as bouncy and the shrinkage whilst still visible was minimal, reduced. My curls also looked more defined than usual, even the heat damaged middle part. Last December I cut off all of my hair and to date, my hair is currently shoulder length when stretched (see the image below for a comparison).
I would definitely recommend this product and I will be purchasing it again. I also hope to try the other products of the Au Naturale range.
