A rare gem.

Shortly after my big chop (cutting off all of my hair), I decided it was time to attempt to style my natural hair. I had been avoiding the task by keeping my hair in box braids. Consulting YouTube, I came across a variety of TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro) tutorials. I decided to attempt the most popular hairstyle, the Wash and Go, using Mixed Roots’ Curl Control Leave-In Lotion. My result, a great disaster! My curls were defined but incredibly flaky; it also took forever to dry.

My next attempt was with Aunt Jackie’s Flaxseed Elongating Curling Gel (and you can read all about it here). Although the results were great, I did experience a little flaking when I used it with certain products. I decided there and then, the Wash and Go was not for me. Several months later, I have found the key to a successful Wash and Go, Cantu Shea Butter Moisturizing Curl Activator Cream (£5.99, from PAK Cosmetics). If you desire defined yet moisturised curls, this is the product for you. The scent is in line with Cantu’s products; it’s coconut meets shea butter. The consistency is more in line with a hair lotion than a gel.

When using this gem, I always start with wet hair. After moisturizing as well as sealing my curls with Cantu’s Creamy Hair Lotion and The Body Shop’s Monoi Oil, using a spray bottle, I spritz my curls with water. This cream works best on wet hair. After I have applied the product (using my fingers to define) I usually allow it to air dry but on some occasions, I use a hairdryer on the lowest heat setting. The result, defined fluffy curls! My hair is on the fine side; this cream gives it much needed volume.

Days later and not a single flake in sight; there is nothing I love more than flake free defined curls. Most curl defining products cause flaking but Cantu’s curl activator cream is a rare gem. However, sometimes it’s the combination of products that causes flaking. Regardless, Cantu is slowly becoming a favourite; I’ve been impressed with everything I’ve tried from the brand so far. I suggest you give Cantu a try, you won’t regret it!
