A purchase based on a compelling reputation as well as a rise in popularity, Akamuti’s Liquid African Black Soap (250ml, £8.95, from Amazon) is a must have for anyone relentlessly battling oily skin. African Black Soap is traditionally sold solid. A liquid alternative is a blessing for those who loathe soap bars as much as myself. Although it’s labelled “naturally unscented”, the scent of this product is reminiscently distinctive. It’s pleasant and rather buttery. I absolutely adore the African inspired illustrated labels. The overall packaging is much suited to the product and its heritage.
Bewilderingly, the soap is “ideally suited for dry, sensitive skin” (according to Akamuti). I have oily but sensitive skin and found this soap too harsh. My eyelids and nose, which are usually oily, were left feeling incredibly dry after using this soap once. Although I was pleased with the results, the rest of my face suffered as my skin felt tight and stripped. If you struggle to control your oily skin, I can only recommend this product if it is used with caution. Although this soap is marketed towards those with dry and sensitive skin, it’s too stripping. Following up my experience with research, I discovered this is why people love African Black Soap. It strips the skin of impurities and heals. If that’s what you need, feel free to try it!
